After an exciting day at the beach, we stop by the Beach Bar for one or more infamous “painkillers”, while sharing a shrimp and fries basket to get us through until dinner time. The Beach Bar is a favorite hangout of tourists as well as the locals. On many evenings you can hear the sounds of live jazz bands playing at the bar echoing across the Great Cruz Bay.
Having been invented on the neighboring island of Jost van Dyke, the painkiller is a staple of the Caribbean and one should not leave the islands before trying out this magic concoction made of rum, orange, pineapple and Coco Lopez, with a generous touch of nutmeg on top. The ones we have enjoyed on our daily stops at the Beach Bar are as close to the original as possible, adorned with a bright, red cherry.
