The Mona Lisa, perhaps the most famous painting in the world is certainly one of the most recognizable pieces of art in the world. Leonardo da Vinci painted this portrait sometime between 1503 and 1506 and it’s been on display in the Louvre since 1797. The painting was stolen in 1911 but after two years was located and in 1913 put back on display. Although visitors to the museum flock to the hall where Da Vinci’s painting is displayed don’t let the crowds deter you from getting an up close view. The painting is smaller than most people imagine.
The galleries of the Louvre seem to stretch on forever. Give yourself plenty of time to see everything because there is much more beautiful art to be seen.
Paintings large and small decorate the walls of the great museum.
