Maho Bay – St John – US Virgin Islands

Ask anybody that has spent time on St John what their favorite beach is and the overwhelming response may be Maho Bay. This is my favorite bay on the island. The water is as calm as any on the island making it a great day even during times of rough ocean conditions.
Sea turtles swim just feet from the shore. It’s not uncommon for me to snorkel here and see a dozen turtles in just a few minutes. The snorkeling at Maho is very good, especially along the right side of the bay. Sting rays, fish, turtles, octopus, and giant tarpon can be seen. On a couple of occasions I’ve seen sharks and on one trip I was fortunate to swim with two giant manta rays.
The scenic overlook to Maho Bay gives you a beautiful view of the bay and the surrounding hills. Maho is about a 20 minute drive from Cruz Bay with parking located right near the water making it very convenient to access. There are no amenities so bring your lunch and make a day of it.
Just to the right of Maho Bay is another popular St John destination, Francis Bay.

In the summer time the laughing gulls arrive on the island. Watch your lunch with these little guys around.
