While visiting New Orleans I took a ride on the Natchez, an authentic riverboat powered by steam engine. The riverboat is propelled by paddle wheel and has no propellers.
For about $30 you get a 2 hour narrated cruise on the mighty Mississippi River. As the ship steams along you are treated to great historical sights as well as an education on how the water way is used today for commerce.
On board are several bars, a restaurant, gift shop, and live music.

Along the river bank is one of the largest sugar factories in the United States. Passing by the factory the air is filled with the sweet scent of brown sugar.

The muddy brown Mississippi River with the New Orleans skyline in the distance. The Mississippi River runs over 200 feet deep in this area with a swift current. During the spring months the river will crest more than 12 feet higher than it does normally.
