The Galleria dell’Accademia di Firenze, or “Gallery of the Academy of Florence”, is an art museum in Florence that is most famous for the famous statue of Michelangelo’s David.
Although you may see other replicas of the statue of David in Florence, the Gallery of the Academy has housed the original statue of David since 1873. It was moved to the museum dedicated to the works of Michelangelo to protect it from the elements and vandalism.
The David was sculpted in 1501-1504 from a single block of marble and stands almost 15 feet high. Michelangelo was not the original sculptor commissioned to begin the work of carving from the marble block called ‘The Giant” but as others resigned from the effort Michelangelo rose to the occasion.
Some call this work the most beautiful statue ever created.

Other works by Michelangelo are on display in the museum. Some of the sculptures remain in various stages of completion making them even more interesting.
Paintings from Michelangelo and other Renaissance masters are on display in the museum.
