Piazza Navona, or Navona Square, isn’t actually a square at all. It’s really a rectangle! All kidding aside, Piazza Navona is one of the most well-known spots in Rome, and for good reason. It is beautiful and when you enter the Piazza for the first time or after seeing it many times you are in awe.
The Piazza has a carnival atmosphere. Street performers, musicians, vendors, and artists, all walk the Piazza adding to this very beautiful setting. In the center of the Piazza is an oval island containing three of the most popular and beautiful fountains in Rome. The three famous fountains are the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi, Fontana del Moro and Fontana di Nettuno. Each with its own story, character, and charm.
The perimeter of the Piazza is lined with restaurants, cafes, hotels, shops, and even the Brazilian embassy. On one side is also a very large and beautiful ordained church, The Church of Sant’Agnese in Agone. (Be sure to venture inside. You won’t be disappointed.)
Each day of the week the Piazza is full of tourists, locals, students, and sightseers, all gathered to enjoy this beautiful place, and it is a favorite of mine also. Sun light changes the colors of the Piazza and gives it an evolving look at all times of day. At night or even in the rain the Piazza takes on different looks so try to visit often.
Piazza Navona is a stop on one of my favorite walks through the city center. The surrounding area contains many excellent bars and restaurants. Some of my favorite places to eat in Rome are very nearby. So explore, you never know what you will find.
Piazza Navona is a place that brightens your mood and puts a smile on your face. It is a place that doesn’t exist anywhere else in the world. With so many other wonderful and unique places that Rome has it doesn’t seem fair that this great city has the Piazza Navona too.
